However, the gravity of the tragedy was instantaneously amplified and dramatically warped by a statement from former President Donald Trump, who chose to politicize the murder in a deeply controversial and unprecedented manner. Instead of offering even a minimal acknowledgment of the brutal loss, the ongoing homicide investigation, or the devastating impact on the surviving Reiner family, Trump framed the killings entirely around the concept of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS). He grotesquely suggested that Reiner’s decades of outspoken, relentless criticism of him had somehow driven others to a state of madness that resulted in violence. For vast numbers of critics and observers, this was the ultimate, lowest-possible politicization of a private, agonizing nightmare.
