A woman walked into my beauty salon one afternoon with tears running down her face. Her son’s wedding was only a few hours away, and she quietly explained that she had just twelve dollars to her name. “I don’t want to embarrass him,” she whispered. “I just want to look presentable.” Without thinking twice, I sat her down, styled her hair, and did her makeup with care.
I refused to take her money. She left smiling, and I thought that would be the end of the story. The next morning, I arrived at work and stopped in my tracks. A small group of people was gathered outside my salon before I even unlocked the door. At the front stood the same woman—radiant and confident—beside a well-dressed young man. She introduced him proudly as her son.
