In Greek mythology, for example, a coin was given to Charon, the ferryman who transported souls across the river to the underworld.

In modern times, the custom is most commonly associated with military graves, particularly in the United States.

Each coin left behind carries a specific message:

• A penny means the visitor is simply paying respects.
• A nickel indicates the visitor attended boot camp with the deceased.
• A dime signifies that the visitor served with them in the same unit.
• A quarter means the visitor was present when the service member passed away.

These small gestures allow visitors to honor fallen soldiers while quietly letting families know their loved one is remembered by those who served alongside them.
