My father is an oncologist. He made it a point to volunteer at a small hospital in a rural town once a week. People would come to him with stomachaches, and he would often prescribe them a certain medication. However, they would often tell him that they couldn’t afford it.
He knew from experience that their pride would prevent them from accepting help directly. So, he came up with a creative solution. He told them that he had gotten the medication as “free samples”. He then had a nurse stock up on the drug and began giving it to his patients so they could get the care they needed.
A Musician’s Gift
To make a long story short, he ended up giving it to me as a gift. Sadly, he passed away just three weeks later. “Farewell, Tom. Of all the individuals I’ve ever known, you were exceptional.” That thoughtful gift from a truly good person will always be a reminder of his kindness.
